Cosmetic Surgery
FACE

Eyelid surgery repairs droopy eyelids and may involve removing excess skin and fat.  Patients who consider eyelid surgery have sagging and heavy eyelids which ages the eye and makes the patient look tired.  With eyelid surgery the upper and/or lower eyelids are restored to a more youthful appearance making the patient look more restful.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail.  A full assessment is then conducted, with the resultant type of surgery tailored according to each patient’s individual requirements.

Procedure

Operation:  1-2 hours
Hospital Stay: day procedure
Driving: 3 days
Back to Work: 1-2 weeks

Recovery
During recovery there will be swelling and discoloration for 1-3 weeks post surgery which is normal.

This surgery corrects prominent ears that often stick out.  Protruding ears can detract from facial appearance and make the patient self-conscious.  Often young children are teased at school.  Cosmetic Ear Surgery seeks to correct such defects and assist in restoring a patient’s confidence.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail following a full assessment.

Procedure

Operation: 1 – 2 hours with general anaesthetic
Hospital Stay: Usually a day procedure
Driving: 3 to 5 days
Back to Work: 1 week

Recovery

Discomfort will be experienced immediately after the procedure.  Ears are bandaged to reduce swelling and to preserve healing.

This procedure is safe and has long lasting natural looking results. Fat transfer, also called fat grafting, fat injections, lipofilling or liposculpture, is performed by taking fat (liposuction) from areas in which the patient have excess fat and injecting it into areas where the patient may be lacking in volume (face, breasts, hands, buttocks).  The overall procedure is relatively pain-free with minimal down time.

People with the following concerns usually undergo the fat transfer procedure for issues relating to the face:

  • sunken cheeks,
  • the disappearance of fat from the cheekbones,
  • deep grooves running from the nose to the corners of the mouth,
  • to revise scars and fill bodily depressions (following injury & scarring, skin conditions and ailments causing fat loss)

The goal is to help the patient achieve the most beautiful and natural-looking results using the patient’s own body cells, as well as to make the patient’s surgical experience as easy and comfortable as possible.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail after a full assessment.

Procedure

Operation: 1-2hrs depending on the size of area to be treated
Hospital Stay:  Seldom required
Driving: 3 to 5 days
Back to Work: +-1 – 2week

Recovery

Recovery is generally quick depending on the extent of liposuction and fat transfer.  There will be swelling and discoloration post surgery which is normal, however this often diminishes within a week.

Scars are tell-tail signs of previous trauma to the skin. Unfortunately, some may be unappealing, especially when located in cosmetically sensitive areas. Scar revision aims to replace, re-orientate, and/or minimize the appearance thereof by means of surgical and/or non-surgical modalities. As one’s history cannot be wholly erased, there is also no procedure that can make a scar disappear completely. However, the unpleasing effects therein may be lessened.

Scar revision may include surgical and non-surgical techniques and helps to make a scar less noticeable. Revision surgery for scars is best performed 6 to 18 months (after the scar matures) after the injury. Treatments can make it less noticeable (surgical scar revision) which is the removal of a scar and re-joining the normal skin thus replacing it with a better looking scar.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail after a full assessment.

Cosmetic Surgery
BREAST

Breast surgery is popular for many reasons from augmenting volume in small breasts, giving sagging breasts a lift, symmetrizing unequal breasts, to alleviating discomfort caused by oversized breasts and boosting overall self-confidence.  Herein lies one of Dr Ngwenya’s special areas of interest and expertise. An initial consultation will assist in guiding the patient’s journey, outlining the benefits and shortcomings, answering any questions the patient may have, and tailoring the procedure to suit the patient individual requirements.

The aim of Breast Augmentation is to enlarge and enhance the size and appearance of breasts. This is achieved by inserting an implant (often made of silicone) underneath the breast. A thorough consultation with Dr Ngwenya will involve, amongst other things, discussions about:

  • The desired size of the breast and options available
  • Type of Implant best suited for you based on measurements your chest
  • Incision areas, and options of implant placement
  • Individual breast structure and its impact on surgery
  • Recovery expectations

Procedure

Operation:  2 hours with general anaesthetic
Hospital Stay: May require 1 night
Driving: 7 days
Back to Work: 2 – 3 weeks

Recovery

Mild to moderate swelling and discomfort is expected along with temporary bruising which is normal.

Giving breasts new life after pregnancy or effects of aging and weight fluctuations is popular. Mastopexy restores the sagging effect by lifting and reshaping the breast. In the event that a larger volume and a breast lift is required, operative techniques for a lift (Mastopexy) may also be combined with breast augmentation (implants) options.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail after a full assessment and the best individualized methods are decided upon.

Procedure

Breast reduction surgery not only reduces discomfort, back pain and other physical symptoms related to having uncomfortably large breasts, but further impacts tremendously on a patient’s lifestyle and psychological wellbeing.  The patient feels more confident, has less “heaviness”, and is able to exercise and wear better fitting clothes.

During consultation patient concerns are discussed in detail after a full assessment.

Cosmetic Surgery
BODY

Often significant weight loss and ageing causes loss of skin elasticity and displacement of fat volume, with stubborn pockets of fat remaining in particular areas regardless of exercise.  Dr Ngwenya’s Body Contouring procedures are very popular and aim to restore and improve your body shape.

A Tummy Tuck is a common procedure which aims to improve the patient’s body image by sculpting the waistline and smoothing the stomach. Some patients feel self-conscious about loose skin around the stomach area sometimes due to weakened abdominal muscles as a result of pregnancy or a C-Section and sometimes due to weight loss.

Abdominoplasty surgery has evolved over the years; thus, the type and extent of the procedure will be dependent on the individual patient requirements. Succinctly, four components are addressed in the surgery:

  • The removal of excess skin around the abdominal region
  • The removal of excess fat
  • The tightening of splayed abdominal muscles (often as a result of pregnancy, and/or aging) and
  • The re-positioning/creation of an umbilicus (belly button)

Liposuction techniques may also be added to the procedure for desired shaping and rejuvenation where required. It is a highly technical surgical procedure wherein the eventual scar will often be hidden on the bikini line.

It is important to express your specific requirements during the Consultation where Dr Ngwenya will then discuss with you the procedure options  that will meet your specific requirements.

Procedure

Operation: Normally surgery takes 2-4 hours with general anaesthetic
Hospital Stay: 1 to 2 nights
Driving: 2 weeks
Back to Work: 2-4 weeks

Recovery

Residual swelling, pain, tightness and lack of mobility will be experienced post surgery which is normal.  Temporary numbness along the incision line will resolve over time.

This surgical procedure is relatively less invasive and successfully removes fat from specific areas of the body (abdomen, chest, back, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms or neck).  It is important to understand that it is not considered as a weight-loss alternative if you are overweight, but rather a body contouring procedure.

Liposuction can target certain areas of the body as some patients find that even with a diet and exercise, stubborn areas remain the same. Scarring from liposuction is negligible, as entry points a small and often placed in areas natural to body contours so as to be less obvious.

It is important to discuss specific requirements during the Consultation where the procedure and adverse events are discussed in detail.

Procedure

Operation: 1-2 hours with general anaesthetic/sedation
Dependent on the region and amount removed
Hospital Stay: generally not required
Driving: 3-7 days depending on the area
Back to Work: 5-14 days

Recovery

Residual swelling, pain, tightness and lack of mobility will be experienced post surgery which is normal and wearing pressure garments after the procedure would be required. Moderate discomfort can be expected.

An arm lift is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper arms and reduces the sign of sagging skin due to weight loss or ageing. Often loose skin on the upper arms cannot be improved with exercise and diet alone and requires surgery. Two components are addressed through varying methods that may include liposuction; excess fat, and/or excess skin.

It is important to discuss your specific requirements and the degree of correction desired during the Consultation where the procedure, options and patient specific requirements are discussed in detail.

Procedure

Operation: Normally surgery takes 2-3 hours with general anaesthetic
Hospital Stay: may not be required
Driving: 7-10 days
Back to Work: 2-3 weeks

Recovery

Discomfort, swelling and bruising can be expected which will lessen after a few days.  It is important to follow post-operative instructions to aid a quick recovery.

Thigh Lift surgery reshapes the thighs by removing loose skin and stubborn fat producing a more sculpted and youthful appearance and can be accompanied with liposuction. Scar visibility is minimized as incisions are made along the natural contours of the groin, however body habitus requirements may vary thus requiring an alternate individualized surgical approach.

It is important to discuss your specific target areas and the degree of correction desired during the Consultation where the procedure, options, and shortcomings are discussed in detail.

Procedure

Operation: Normally surgery takes 2-4 hours with general anaesthetic
Hospital Stay: Dependent of patient and extend of procedure
Driving:  2-4 weeks
Back to Work: 3 to 4 weeks

Recovery

Swelling and bruising can be expected but will lessen as you recover although it may be several weeks before resuming normal activity. Drains may be required postoperatively to drain excess fluid as required.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which reshapes the stretched or enlarged folds of skin surrounding the vagina. It only remodels the inner lips of the vulva and does not make the vagina smaller or tighter, nor does it interfere with sexual erectile tissue such as the clitoris.

It is important to discuss your specific concerns and the degree of correction desired during the Consultation where the procedure, options, and shortcomings are discussed in detail.
